Here are a few important questions, and Jessica's answers:
Why should each player do a baseline?
Baselines are helpful in establishing some sense of a normal cognitive level prior to an injury. A post-injury test is taken at some point, when an athlete can tolerate it, after their injury to compare to their baseline. This helps to determine when the athlete has returned to baseline as a component in determining when it is safe to return to play along with being symptom free and handling a full cognitive load.
When would the use of the baseline come into play?
If a person sustains an injury, then the post-injury tests can be compared to determine the pattern of their normal cognitive level.
If a player may have a concussion, what would this process do for him?
The simple fact of discussing concussions helps to bring attention to the fact that they can be very serious injuries, especially if they are not managed properly. Awareness has been heightened due to the publicity from professional sports and there are a lot of misconceptions that still need to be clarified. By establishing a protocol in case a head injury is sustained, organizations are being proactive so that once an injury is suspected it can be handled properly. Preparedness and education is key to ease concerns of the athletes and their families.
